INVOLVEMENTS AT OU:
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE OUT?
It is easiest to ignore, alienate, and discriminate against people that are "invisible" because we can't understand how our actions impact them.  Having visible LGBT people and allies is the key to helping people acknowledge that we are a valuable, contributing part of society.
WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”?  WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF?
I am proud to be an intelligent, creative, caring individual who happens to be a lesbian.  I am most proud of not allowing myself to be bullied, intimidated, or otherwise made powerless in my everyday life.
WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF COMING OUT?
I feel the most difficult part of coming out is having to do so every day.  Unfortunately our society is based on assumptions regarding gender identity and sexual orientation, so every time I am in a new environment or meet someone new, I may have to address the assumption that I am straight.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT?
There is no right and wrong way to come out as an LGBT person or ally.  Just as we are all unique individuals, the process of coming out for each of us will be different.  Also, don't be afraid to seek out support.
THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS:
LGBT concerns really are everyone's concerns.  Chances are you will know a childhood friend, co-worker, family member, or someone else in your life who identifies as LGBT.  Ensuring that there is fair and equitable treatment for all will help assure that your friends and loved ones have a safe community to be part of later.
