Gretchen Stephens, Ally
Director, University Events

INVOLVEMENTS AT OU:
Mentoring, teaching, nurturing, supporting, encouraging, valuing, appreciating, loving, sharing, with students, staff and faculty.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE OUT or TO BE AN ALLY?
As an Ally I am here to provide all the items listed above, provide a safe “place” where LGBTQ folks feel that they can come for whatever reason, to be an added voice for issues and concerns of the community, and to stand with LGBTQ persons in the face of adversity.

WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF?
I am “Proud” of the growth of the community at Ohio University over the past many years and the voices that have given rise to actions and results, i.e., having a LGBT office with a director in place.  I am most proud of my nephew, Stephen, who“came out” 3 years ago, and throughout the resulting trials and tribulations that I can only imagine, has demonstrated an ever-present understanding of the concept of truly loving one another and respecting one another for being the individuals that we are.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT?
Know that the community is there to support you, nurture you, and guide you through the process. Seek out an ally, and never be afraid to ask for help and understanding.

THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS:  WE love in a nation where“freedom” is to be available to all citizens. We are all equal!  With the same rights!  Non-LGBT people need to stand as allies with the LGBT community and assure each their “freedom!”

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
Congratulations to Mickey Hart and the student staff of the LGBT Center, and all the student leaders working to promote LGBT issues and events.
