Jennifer Hinton, Ally
Assistant Professor, School of Recreation and Sport Sciences and Coordinator, Recreation Studies Program

INVOLVEMENTS AT OU:
I’ve been at OU as a faculty member in the School of Recreation and Sport Sciences since 2000.  I spend alot of time with students, both in and out of class.  I think it’s really important as a faculty member that we get to know not only other faculty and staff on campus, but also our students.  Developing those relationships is just as important to my growth as it is for students’ growth, too.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE OUT or TO BE AN ALLY?
It is important for me to be an ally because I want all people to feel safe and welcomed in my office and on our campus.  There are so many wonderful people in the world; I want to be open to learning from all of them.

WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF?
This is a really hard question- as a mother of two beautiful children, they are what first come to mind. However, for myself I think I am most proud of being a person that serves other people; one who tries to genuinely be aware of others’ needs.

THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS:
We all deserve to be respected as whole people.  If someone is gay, for example, that is only one part of him or her.  Take a chance to get to know the complete person in front of you.
