Jean Demosky, Ally
Administrator, Academic Technology, Center for Writing Excellence, and Center for Teaching Excellence

INVOLVEMENTS AT OU:
OU alumna: B.A.1988 & M.A. 1999.  I’ve taught Cross Cultural Communication/Diversity for OU Maintenance and Dining Services workers, I am a SafeZone representative, a certified mediator, and I have served on Administrative Senate and numerous other committees over the years.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE OUT or TO BE AN ALLY?
I am passionate about celebrating diversity and about equal rights.

WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF?
I am proud when people who have only enrolled in my diversity class because it is required end up feeling it is one of the best courses they ever took. I don’t preach, I ask them to become more aware and educated about the issues and then see if they might change their views. It works more often than not!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT?
Be proud of yourself and gain strength by surrounding yourself with folks who support you.

THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS:
Reserve judgment until you’ve walked a mile in another’s shoes.
