Early Childhood

Undergraduate Programs

The Colleges of Education and Health and Human Services offer the Early Childhood Program at Ohio University. Graduates of this program earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood conferred jointly by the Colleges of Education and Health and Human Services. Graduates will be competent, qualified educators of young children between the ages of three and eight years old.

Graduates of the Early Childhood Program will be informed, responsible practitioners who promote child development and learning by:
  • Using their knowledge of young children’s characteristics and needs.
  • Understanding multiple, interacting influences on children’s development and learning.
  • Constructing environments for learning that are healthy, respectful, supportive, and challenging for all young children.
Graduates of the Early Childhood Program will be appreciative and accepting of the many forms of diversity in a pluralistic society who build family and community relationships by:
  • Knowing, understanding, and valuing the important and complex characteristics of young children’s families and communities.
  • Using these understandings to create respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower young children’s families.
  • Involving all families in their young children’s development and learning.
Graduates of the Early Childhood Program will be agents and advocates of positive change who observe, document, and assess the participation and performance of young children in learning environments by:
  • Understanding the goals, benefits, and legitimate uses of assessment.
  • Using responsibly assessment strategies that promote young children’s development and learning.
  • Communicating these strategies to young children’s families.
Graduates of the Early Childhood Program will be ethical, reflective decision-makers and problem-solvers who teach and learn in ways that promote positive development and learning for all young children by:
  • Connecting with children and families, using positive relationships and supportive interactions as the foundation for their work with young children.
  • Using developmentally appropriate approaches, strategies, and tools to influence positively young children’s development and learning.
  • Understanding content knowledge in the early childhood curricula and knowing the essential concepts, inquiry tools, and resources to deepen their knowledge base.
Graduates of the Early Childhood Program will be principled, expert leaders who inform others about the process of professionals making decisions about the well-being and education of young children. They will commit to their professional identity and growth and conduct themselves as members of the early childhood profession by:
  • Knowing and using ethical guidelines and other professional standards of classroom practice.
  • Collaborating with other teacher-learners.
  • Demonstrating knowledgeable, reflective, and critical perspectives on their work.
  • Making informed decisions that integrate knowledge from a variety of sources.
  • Demonstrating informed activity for sound educational practices and policies.
Graduates of the Early Childhood Program will demonstrate they are proficient and ethical users of technology by:
  • Using technology to promote student learning and professional growth.
  • Using technology as a teaching-learning tool.
  • Keeping current with new technological innovations.
  • Displaying an awareness of the benefits and potential risks of technology.
  • Using ethical practices and professional guidelines when choosing and implementing technology in the classroom.
Graduates of the Early Child Program will demonstrate they are competent and capable in research and assessment by:
  • Using research-based assessments and instructional practices.
  • Using research and assessment to inform and improve practice.
  • Using multiple types of assessments to evaluate student progress.
  • Keeping current with latest early childhood research and assessments.
  • Using ethical practices and professional guidelines when using research and assessments.
