Counselor Education

Undergraduate Program

“Informed, responsible practitioners”

• Graduates of the counselor education program will be exposed to a curriculum which is nationally accredited by CACREP and CORE to ensure that they are competent to practice in their chosen area of counseling specialization.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will be eligible to obtain state licensure and/or national certification as professional counselors.

• Graduates of the counselor education program will be competent to work with clients from various cultures, ethnic backgrounds, individuals with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will respect and understand the impact of culture on the counseling process and implement counseling services which are sensitive to cultural issues.

“Ethical, reflective decision-makers and problem-solvers”

• Graduates of the counselor education program will be knowledgeable of and adherent to professional codes of ethics in the counseling profession and standards of practice
• Graduates of the counselor education program will be competent in the ethical decision-making process.

• Graduates of the counselor education program will be active participants in professional associations at the local, regional, and national levels.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will be committed to the advocacy of the clients they serve.

• Graduates of the counselor education program will maintain membership in professional associations in the field of counseling.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will achieve credentials consistent with the practice of professional counseling and maintain these credentials through appropriate continuing education.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will be able to articulate the unique qualities that differentiate professional counseling from other types of human service professions.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will remain knowledgeable about legislative issues that impact the practice of professional counseling.

• Graduates of the counselor education program will be proficient in the use of technology in teaching and presentation.
• Graduates of the counselor education will adhere to the ethical guidelines for the use of technology in counseling as set forth in the American Counseling Association 2005 Code of Ethics.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will be familiar with current technologies to assist with the provision of counseling services and record-keeping.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will be able to use technology to search for resources and conduct resources.

• Graduates of the counselor education program will conduct meaningful research to advance the profession of counseling.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will present and publish research findings to advance the profession of counseling.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will be skilled in personality, career, performance, and intelligence testing.
• Graduates of the counselor education program will be leaders in the profession in the proliferation of original research.
