Journalism
Undergraduate Program
- A student will have a broad understanding of society and the role of journalism in society.
- A student will understand and develop the highest possible standards of journalism ethics.
- A student will understand the importance of the First Amendment and the legal context in which he or she will be working as a journalist.
- A student will be knowledgeable about sources of needed information, including electronic methods of information gathering.
- A student will be able to write, without mechanical errors, an article in appropriate form with an understanding of the content and context of the article.
- A student will have an understanding of the processes and techniques of his or her specific journalistic specialty (sequence).
- A student will learn about and support diversity in all aspects of society and his/her profession.
- A student will develop critical analytical and thinking skills to be applied in the search for truth.
- A student will develop speaking abilities to be able to articulate a story, a position, an argument or point of view.
- A student will learn skills that will enhance free, responsible and effective expression of ideas
Graduate Programs
Master's students
- Students will be able to explain theory and principles of their area of journalism specialization.
- Students will be able to read and comprehend mass communication research.
- Students will be able to write scholarly papers.
- Students will be able to conduct mass communication research at a basic level of competence.
- Students will be competent in the professional practices of their specialization.
Doctoral students
- Students will be able to describe and explain theories and principles of mass communication in general and in their specialization
- Students will be able to conduct and publish complex scholarly research in mass communication.
- Students will be able to read, critically evaluate, and apply research in mass communication.
- In most cases, students will be able to teach courses in their specialization. Some graduates enter nonacademic occupations.
- Students will be competent in the professional practices of their specialization.
- Students will understand the professional expectations for teaching and research in the academic environment.
