Leadership Branding

The concept of a leadership brand is adaptable to virtually any individual’s background, goals, and skills and could be presented to any number of groups—student or otherwise. What is a brand?   “It is a set of fundamental principles as understood by anyone who comes into contact with a company.  A brand is an organization's ‘reason for being’; it is how that reason is expressed through the various communications to its key audiences, including customers, shareholders, employees, and analysts" ("Defining a brand," 2009, pp. 1-4).

According to Dave Ullrich and Norm Smallwood (co-authors of the Leadership Brand), to build a leadership brand it is necessary to understand the purpose of leadership, develop personal leadership skills, and be able to evaluate leader performance (Goldsmith, 2007).  Each individual has a different "product" or strength to promote, as businesses do, a target group, and a purpose for serving as a leader.
