Kevin Uhalde received his Ph.D. in History and the Program in the Ancient World at Princeton University (1999), and his B.A. in History and Classical Civilization from Mary Washington College (1993). He has published or delivered scholarly papers on topics ranging from medieval ovens to medieval penance, from dark age coinage to dark age bishops, and from the spoken language of the Basques (his paternal ancestors) to the formulaic language of ancient oaths. His first book, Expectations of Justice in the Age of Augustine (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2007) represents his ongoing interest in how intellectuals, including religious professionals, handled the ordinary failures of society. His current research focuses on late Roman justice and early popes as scholars. He also is writing a book tentatively entitled Penance and Repentance in Christian Antiquity. Professor Uhalde has received an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies and, most recently, a Rome Prize Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. He teaches courses on Europe and the Mediterranean region during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, including early and medieval Christianity, and has directed and taught in Ohio University's Fall Program in Rome. He has served on Faculty Senate and two years as president of Ohio University’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors.
