Congratulations to the following students for successfully defending their thesis, project & COMPS:
Jill Klimpel with her committee, Drs. Walker, Whitson & Jokisch. Her thesis was entitled 'Brazilians in Columbus, Ohio: A New Settlement Destination City for a Brazilian Immigrant Community'
Immigrant
communities have been developing in a diverse array of new settlement
destinations throughout the US, and Columbus, Ohio is no exception.
This research focuses specifically on a group of Brazilian immigrants
in Columbus, to better understand the city as a settlement
destination, as well as the changing profile of the Brazilian
immigrant community. Using a semi-ethnographic method that
incorporates both qualitative and quantitative data, this research
presents several new findings. First, it portrays a diverse
community of Brazilian immigrants, including Brazilians from Rondonia.
Second, it offers insight to the literature on Brazilians in the
US in reference to their manner to self-identify, as well as
implications on their feelings of fear. Third, it
highlights the importance of the internet as a vital space for
immigrant communities. Finally, it supports findings on the
importance of the five new settlement destination
factors.

Dr. Elena Jackson Albarrán, history professor at
Miami of Ohio, spoke to OU students interested in
Latin America about the development of the
children's magazine "Pulgarcito" after the
Mexican Revolution. During a time of rebuilding
and a focus on education, José Vasconcelos (La
raza cósmica), the minister of education,
promoted education in rural Mexico and the
creation of a national identity. This magazine,
dedicated to and edited by children, reflects
various components of the new national identity.
Icons such as the volcanos of Mexico City, Itza
and Popo, as well as imitations of the styles of
Orozco, Siqueiros and Rivera, the great
murlaists, were a given and children won various
awards according to the nationalist portrayal of
Mexicanism.
Alexandra García Iragorri, professor of Political
Science and Judicial Law, and Silvia Gloria, Dean
of the College of Law, join Rafael Obregón and
Betsy Partyka to talk about an agreement between
Universidad del Norte in Barranquilla, Colombia
and OU. García Iragorri graduated from
International Studies and sees the value of
increasing our relations with this Colombian
university that also offers enhance courses in
the social sciences. LAS is hoping to receive
candidates for our MA program in the near future.
