Lancaster – Ohio University Lancaster students say the new menu at "The Zone" is going to make it easier to eat healthy while going to school. The OUL student lounge re-opened Monday for the first day of classes. It is now being managed by an extension of Ohio University's Auxiliaries Department in Athens, Bobcat Essentials. There is a new menu and new hours of operation.
"I had the egg salad and Jello," said Accounting Major Bill Clark. "It was very good. The food was very fresh."
Bobcat Essentials makes fresh items daily in Athens using some produce from local farmers. They transport those items to Lancaster and sell them in "The Zone." Faculty, staff and students filled the seats in "The Zone" Monday at lunch time eager to try the new menu. Many were very excited about the salad bar.
"I thought it was awesome," said Junior Shelby Wright. "Now we have more healthy options when we eat. It's great."
"We have fresh bakery items, soups, salads and side salads, as well as pizza baked at OUL and a "Create Your Own" deli like what you would see at Subway," said Auxiliaries Associate Director of Retail Operations Kent Scott. "We provide fresh, healthy items for students, faculty and staff."
Senior Erika Zlatkind is a psychology major. She ate with Wright and said she got a Chicken Sandwich at the "Create Your Own" deli.
"I thought it was really good. I like how you can make your own," said Zlatkind. "I thought there needed to be healthier food on campus. I try to eat healthy and now there are healthy options."
"The Zone" has long been a partnership between Fairfield Developmental Disabilities and Ohio University Lancaster to train DD clients for jobs. That relationship will continue and a job coach from Fairfield DD is training DD clients working at "The Zone."
Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
