Lancaster – Ohio University Lancaster's athletic director will be honored during this year's Fairfield County Development Disabilities Celebration of Possibilities.
Jeff Whitehead was selected for this year's Commitment Award. Whitehead has played an integral role in solidifying the relationship between a number of university programs and Fairfield DD. He was selected for the award because of his role with The Zone. The Zone is the food service operation that Fairfield DD operates on the Lancaster Campus and clients of Fairfield DD are employed there.
"All of our awards are based on helping us to advance our mission, which is to bring about a vibrant community where people lead fulfilling lives and make meaningful contributions," said John Bosser, Fairfield DD community outreach coordinator. "Jeff is the perfect example of making that happen. He goes out of his way to ensure that the guys and gals who work at The Zone fit into the campus community. They truly feel as if they are a part of the OUL staff. And the staff and students view them the same way."
Bosser said that Whitehead has also opened the doors for the "No Limits Basketball Camp." The annual event is an inclusive skills camp for kids with and without disabilities.
Whitehead was nominated for the award by the manager of The Zone, Kathy Dennison. Dennison said Whitehead is the perfect example of what commitment is all about.
"Nobody deserves the Commitment Award more than him," said Dennison. "His constant commitment to The Zone and to our employees is a big part of what made it such a success."
Dennison received the Distinguished Service Award at the 2012 Celebration of Possibilities.
"Our partnership with Fairfield County Developmental Disabilities is one the Lancaster Campus is tremendously proud of," said Campus Dean Jim Smith. "Jeff's role in fostering and promoting that relationship has been crucial. The award is well deserved."
Whitehead will be honored along with five others at the Celebration of Possibilities banquet. The awards judging panel included Fairfield DD staff members, former award winners and volunteers from the community. The 5th Annual Celebration of Possibilities will be held on Thursday, March 28 at the Crossroads Center in Lancaster.
