November 06, 2012 : O.U. Lancaster Professor to speak on Equal Rights Amendment

Lancaster – Ohio University Lancaster | Pickerington Communications Studies and Women's and Gender Studies Instructor Pamela Kaylor believes many do not know that the Equal Rights Amendment has never been adopted. Kaylor is speaking about the topic at the Ohio National Organization for Women Conference November 10.  She is one of the main speakers.

"I think most people don't know why it's never been adopted and they don't understand it," said Kaylor.

The Equal Rights Amendment, which would affirm that men and women have equal rights under federal law, was first proposed in 1923. It was passed out of the U.S. Congress in 1972 but only 35 of the necessary 38 states ratified it.

"I have done a great deal of research into the history of the Equal Rights Amendment, specifically the everyday, ordinary women who did extraordinary work for the Equal Rights Amendment," said Kaylor. "I'm going to be talking about the history of the movement, specifically talking about those notable women who are everyday people and who people can identify with and the very horrific fact that many of these women are dying and they will never get to see their work play out because the Equal Rights Amendment has not been ratified."

Kaylor believes if people are educated on the topic and motivated to do something about it, the Equal Rights Amendment can become the next amendment to the United States Constitution.

'Many people think we don't need it because we have other amendments, yet none of these other amendments protect us fully. So, we really just need to get activated and get other people involved," said Kaylor. "We talk about equal pay and discrimination in the work place. These are issues that a federal amendment could address. There are people working on it in Washington now, so it's not dead and buried."
