Lancaster – Ohio University Lancaster Campus Dean Dr. Jim Smith is the conference chair for the 2013 Regional Branch Campus Administrators Senior Leadership Conference in Longboat Key, Florida. The conference is being held June 16 – 19.
"The theme for this year's conference is 'Survival in Lean Times: Solutions, Motivation and Progress,'" said Smith. "For more than three decades, the Regional and Branch Campus Administrators Conference has been a leading forum for discussion of issues pertinent regional and branch campuses."
The conference is designed to maximize interaction among colleagues from multi-campus settings and allows senior administrators to share ideas relevant to extension environments.
"Many regional and branch campuses are seeing higher enrollment because of their proximity and affordability for students, but the economy is still struggling and that can often mean less state support. Regional campus leaders know how to be creative and meet the needs of their community efficiently and often with limited resources," said Smith. "This conference is designed for and will benefit institutional leaders such as chief academic and administrative officers and academic leaders aspiring to that role."
The conference has two keynote speakers.Dr. Sanford C. Shugart currently serves as president of Valencia College in Orlando, Florida, that is one of the nation's largest and most celebrated two-year colleges. His presentation is called "Shaping the Culture of your Campus." Shugart will explore the deeply-rooted cultures of higher education and approaches for engaging in purposeful culture change as a leader.
Dr. Bill Balzer will also provide a keynote as well as a question and answer session on his presentation. Balzer is dean of BGSU Firelands, Bowling Green State University's regional college in Huron, Ohio. Balzer is also a professor in BGSU's doctoral program in industrial-organizational psychology, one of the five top-ranked doctoral programs in the U.S. Balzer's presentation, based on his book, is called "Lean Higher Education: Principles and Practices for Making Your Branch Campus More Effective." During the presentation, Balzer will talk about how regional campuses provide excellent opportunities to embrace "Lean Higher Education (LHE)" and to maintain their excellence despite budget cuts, higher enrollments, and increasing calls for accountability.
The RBCA conference is sponsored this year by Ohio University's Office of Regional Higher Education.
