October 22, 2012 : OUL Students to Walk in the Shoes of Those Who Experience Domestic Violence

Lancaster – Students at Ohio University Lancaster plan to "Walk in their Shoes" to mark National Domestic Violence Prevention Month. The two-mile walk around the bike path near Ohio University Lancaster will be held on Thursday, October 25 at 2 p.m.

Student in the Human Services Student Association came up with the idea. The students are soliciting sponsorships and the money generated will be donated to the Lighthouse Shelter.

"Our program has conducted some focus groups on campus and has concluded that we have a significant population of our students who are currently experiencing verbal, emotional or physical abuse from their partner," said Lisa Skeens, Human Services Technology program coordinator.

"Obviously, this is a concern for the academic and social welfare of our students."

Skeens is asking faculty and staff to also participate in the walk. She believes that faculty participation encourages those dealing with abuse in their personal life.

"It is a powerful message for students to see that their faculty and staff care about their welfare.Even if it helps one life, it is worth it.," said Skeens.

Skeens said it is important to raise awareness about the issue and she hopes this walk does that on the Ohio University Lancaster Campus and around the community.
