Pickerington – The Pickerington Area Chamber of Commerce is holding an education summit at Ohio University's Pickerington Center on Friday. The summit will focus on State of Ohio's Common Core Standards.
The Common Core Standards focus on core conceptual understandings and procedures starting in the early grades. The goal is to enable teachers to take the time needed to teach core concepts and procedures well and to give students the opportunity to master them.
"The idea behind the summit was to create an event to inform the business community and residents of the changes in our schools in 2013-2014 school year," said Pickerington Chamber President Helen Mayle. "We want to continue to be proactive in providing the most up-to-date information to our Pickerington Area businesses and residents."
State Representative Gerry Stebelton will start the summit and discuss recent issues in Columbus and in the General Assembly. Then, Terry Ryan from the Thomas B. Fordham Institute will talk about Ohio's Common Core Standards and how they were developed in the state. Finally, a panel of area school superintendents will talk about the standards. The panel is made up of Pickerington Superintendent Rob Walker, Lancaster Superintendent Steve Wigton and Reynoldsburg Superintendent Steve Dackin.
"We are pleased to provide a venue for important and current topics in education," said Pickerington Center Director Leigh Atkinson.
The event starts at 9:00 a.m. and will end at noon.
