INTRODUCTION This web site contains the general instructions and lessons for UC 203 -- Credit for Work Experience: Portfolio Development. Prerequisites for this course are ENG 151 or ENG 152 or ENG 153 and permission from Experiential Learning Program. This course provides a means by which selected students may design a portfolio of their experiences and the learning gained from them in a systematic and documented way. The portfolio thus created may then be submitted to faculty of Ohio University for assessment and possible award of credit for college courses. The lessons of this course are designed to assist the student in the process of analyzing and recording goals, the experiences gained in employment, community activities, and hobbies, and the learning gained from those experiences, and presenting them in an orderly sequence. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK None required. Examples from Ohio University Portfolios, Athens, OH: Ohio University, 2001 (supplied with the course) LESSON ASSIGNMENTS The course has six lessons. Each lesson will guide you through the steps of creating your portfolio, with the sixth (and final) lesson being your completed portfolio. Completing the Course IDL courses have been designed to allow interaction between us and feedback on your assignments. You will make the best progress if you set a regular schedule to work on your lessons and submit your assignments. In order to benefit from my comments, you should normally wait to submit a lesson until the previous one has been graded and returned to you. In a classroom environment, this course takes ten weeks. You should consider taking at least the same amount of time to complete the work. If you work too slowly, you may lose some of the information you have gained; too quickly and you may get lost in the details. Make sure you take enough time to learn the material well. EXAMINATIONS There are no required examinations for the course.
GRADING CRITERIA No grades are given for the lesson assignments. Letter grades are ordinarily assigned at the completion of this course. Students who wish the grade of "CR" (credit) instead must request it at the time of enrolling for the course. Final evaluation in this course will take into account the student's assignments, articulation and documentation of prior learning in the portfolio, and the organization of the components into a comprehensive, well-written document. Successful completion of the course does not guarantee award of credit in any course for which the student may seek assessment; only approved Ohio University faculty evaluators can make that judgment. Communicating with the instructor If you have questions or problems related to the content of this course, you may contact your instructor at matyas@ohio.edu.
