SOC 101W - Introduction to Sociology
Four Quarter Hours

 
Prerequisites: None; this course may be used toward the Tier II Social Sciences requirement for Ohio University students.
 
Course Overview: The course presents an introduction to the content of sociology and its attempts to understand people in societal groups; it also provides a general introduction to sociological research.
 
Methods of Course Instruction: All material for this course is Web-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through e-mail and the course Web site.

Technical Requirements: The following operating systems and browsers are fully tested and supported by Blackboard:

∙ Macintosh OS 10.3 running Internet Explorer 5.2 or Safari 1.2

Other combinations of operating systems and browsers may be compatible with Blackboard 6.3. However, they have not been fully tested so you may experience problems.

 
Lessons and Writing Assignments: Five Writing Assignments consist of essay questions covering the content of each lesson; these are submitted for evaluation. Writing Assignments 4 and 7 are the midcourse and final examinations, respectively.
 
Examinations: The course has supervised midcourse and final examinations, each covering approximately half of the course content. The examinations consist of multiple-choice, true/false, and short-essay questions. Two hours is allowed for each examination; no books, notes, or supplementary materials are permitted.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.
 
Grading Criteria: Five lesson assignments (each worth 20 points), the midcourse examination, and the final examination each count 100 points, for a total of 300 possible points for the course.

Letter grades are assigned on the basis of points earned, using the following scale:
 

270-300 points = A
240-269 points = B
210-239 points = C
180-209 points = D
179 points or less = F

 

Plus and minus grades may also be assigned at the discretion of the instructor.
