PSY 336 - Social Psychology
Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: PSY 101 and 120 (or 221), or equivalent introductory courses in psychology and social science statistics. Students are expected to have reading and writing skills appropriate to the junior level.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course covers various aspects of social psychology–the study of how people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by their interactions with others. Topics include social beliefs and judgments, attitudes, conformity, persuasion, group influence, prejudice and aggression, and attraction and helping. The topics are explored from an experimental research basis.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

E-PRINT OPTION
Students may use e-mail to submit lesson assignments, using any e-mail provider and any standard e-mail software. The assignments that are submitted electronically are printed and sent to the instructor by mail, not e-mail, so assignments may be sent as attached documents, thus preserving the original format. Graded assignments will be returned as printed copy by postal mail. Instructions for the e-print option are enclosed with the course guide.

NUMBER OF LESSONS: The course has six lessons, including two supervised examinations. Each non-exam lesson covers two or three chapters in the textbook.
TYPES OF WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: Lesson writing assignments consist of 2-3 essay questions covering each chapter assigned in the lesson. Each answer is expected to be approximately 2 typed pages (about 300 words).
EXAMINATIONS: The course has two supervised examinations, each covering approximately half of the course material. The examinations consist of multiple-choice questions—sample self-check tests before each examination help to focus the student's review and preparation.

GRADING CRITERIA: All lesson assignments and examinations receive letter grades. The final course grade is weighted at 20 percent for each examination (40 percent of total) and 15 percent for each lesson assignment (60 percent of total).

Lesson assignments are graded on the basis of the student's understanding of the concepts presented in the reading and reasoned opinion or point of view on the topics.


Examinations are worth 100 points each. The numeric score is converted to a grade based on the following scale:

  93-100 = A
90-92 = A
87-89 = B+
83-86 = B
80-82 = B-
77-79 = C+
73-76 = C
70-72 = C-
67-69 = D+
63-66 = D
60-62 = D-
Below 60 = F
