PSY 221 - Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences
Five Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: MATH 113 or tier math placement above 113, or equivalent college-level algebra course. Students with credit for MATH 251, PSY 121 or QBA 201 may not enroll in this course.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course introduces students to the concepts and processes of basic statistics, including graphing, measures of central tendency and variability, and computation and interpretation of several tests of hypotheses.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The course has 12 lessons, including 3 supervised examinations. Each regular lesson has a submitted assignment consisting of problems from the relevant chapter(s) of the text.
EXAMINATIONS: The course has three examinations, each covering three lessons. Two hours is allowed for each examination. The examinations have two parts: a closed-book objective-question section testing basic principles and interpretation, and an open-book section testing the ability to apply statistical measures to problems. Students may bring and use a simple calculator for the examinations.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

GRADING CRITERIA: The final grade will be weighted one-fourth for the lesson assignments and three-fourths for the examinations. Grades will be computed on numeric values and converted as follows:

90 - 100% = A
86 - 89% = A-
82 - 85% = B+
78 - 81% = B
74 - 77% = B-
70 - 73% = C+
66 - 69% = C
62 - 65% = C-

58 - 61% = D+
54 - 57% = D
50 - 53% = D-
Below 50% = F
