Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: None; a knowledge of basic algebra and geometry is helpful, but not required. Note: Students who have taken Astronomy 100 should not enroll in this course (courses have the same content).

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course is a general introduction to astronomy, covering such topics as the size and structure of the universe, the history and major discoveries of astronomy, stars, galaxies, the solar system, planets and other objects such as meteors, asteroid, and comets.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

E-PRINT OPTION
Students may use e-mail to submit lesson assignments, using any e-mail provider and any standard e-mail software. LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The course has twelve lessons, including two supervised examinations. Each lesson writing assignment consists of a set of multiple-choice questions covering the material of the lesson. Ample self-check questions are also provided in each lesson to allow students to assess their understanding and to practice with the types of questions in the submitted assignments.
EXAMINATIONS: The midcourse and final examinations each cover about half of the content of the course. The questions are multiple-choice, similar to those in the lesson writing assignments. The examinations must be taken under supervision; two hours is allowed for each exam.

Students may bring and use their calculator, but no books, notes, or other supplementary aids are permitted.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

GRADING CRITERIA: Lessons assignments and the two examinations are graded on a 100-point scale. The average of the 10 lesson assignment grades is added to the grades on each of the exams, and that total is divided by 3 to arrive at a final score.

The numerical average is converted to a letter grade according to the following scale:

A- to A
B- to B+
C- to C+
D- to D+
F
