| PREREQUISITES: Junior rank or above; this course is not open to freshmen or sophomores or students with credit for Philosophy 101. |
| COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is designed for the upperclass student who has not had a previous course in philosophy. Students are introduced to four primary concepts in philosophy including metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and social and political philosophy. |

METHODS
OF COURSE INSTRUCTION:
All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and
students communicate and exchange materials through postal
mail.
If students
have access to e-mail, they may use this method to send lesson
assignments and receive the instructor's feedback. Students
may use any e-mail provider and any standard e-mail software.
E-mail accounts are not provided for Independent and Distance
Learning Programs by Ohio University.

| LESSONS
AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The
course has twelve lessons including two supervised examinations.
Eight of the regular lessons have submitted assignments consisting
of multiple-choice, sentence completion, and short-answer questions.
Lessons 10 and 11 each require a 3-4 page essay on a question
related to the lesson's reading. |
EXAMINATIONS:
The
course has two supervised examinations. The midcourse examination
covers Lessons 1-4; the final examination is comprehensive,
covering lessons in the course. The examination format is similar
to the lesson writing assignments. Two hours is allowed for
each examination, and no books, notes, or supplementary aids
are permitted.
If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail. |
| GRADING CRITERIA: Letter grades will be given for all lesson assignments and the two examinations. The final grade will be weighted as follows:
