PHIL 120 - Principles of Reasoning
Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: None; this course satisfies the Tier I Mathematics requirement for Ohio University students.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is an introduction to the basic concepts and language of logic. It includes the Logic of the Categorical Syllogism (Aristotelian logic), Informal Logic and its fallacies, and Propositional Logic.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

Students may purchase an optional videotape containing demonstrations of problems from each unit. The tape is purchased from the Independent and Distance Learning office for $30.00. Access to a VHS VCR is needed to view the tape. Tape cannot be sent to overseas students except APO and FPO addresses.

LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The course has five lessons, including a supervised final examination. Lessons 1-4 are each divided into three or four units. Each unit contains a short test covering the concepts from the reading for the unit. Questions may be terms to define, arguments to identify, or proofs to derive. The tests for each unit are submitted in groups as lesson writing assignments.
EXAMINATIONS: The course has one comprehensive final examination with questions similar to those on the unit tests. Two hours is allowed for the examination. All materials are provided; no textbooks, notes, or supplementary aids are permitted.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

GRADING CRITERIA: Each lesson writing assignment is graded. The course grade is determined 50 percent by the assignment grades and 50 percent by the grade on the final examination.

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION: Active Terms: Not term-based; self-paced study. Eight months to finish.
