PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT SCIENCES

PESS 204W - History and Principles of Physical Education

Prerequisites: Professional Standing Core for Sport Sciences.
 
Course Overview: This undergraduate course covers the history of sport and physical education from ancient to modern times. The principles underlying physical education in a modern program of education are stressed.
 
Methods of Course Instruction: All material for this course is Web-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through e-mail or course Web site.

Other combinations of operating systems and browsers may be compatible with Blackboard 6.3. However, they have not been fully tested so you may experience problems.

 
Number of Lessons: The course has thirteen lessons, including two supervised examinations.
 
Types of Writing Assignments: The writing assignments consist of a number of short-answer essay questions, many of which are identifying terms and people.
 
Examinations: There will be supervised midcourse and final examinations, each lasting two hours. The examinations consist of short-answer and essay questions.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included on the course Web site. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

 

Grading Criteria: All lesson assignments and examinations will be graded. The final grade is determined as

  92 - 100% = A
90 - 91 = A-
88 - 89 = B+
82 - 87 = B
80 - 81 = B-

68 - 69 = D+
62 - 67 = D
60 - 61 = D-
Below 60% = F
