| PREREQUISITES: Four years of high school mathematics, including trigonometry and solid geometry, or MATH 115, Pre-Calculus, or permission of the Math department. Students who have completed MATH 163A & B may not enroll in this course for credit. |
| COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is designed primarily for students in mathematics, engineering, and the physical sciences. It is a basic survey of calculus with concepts of analytic geometry covered as needed. Topics covered include definition of functions and graphing techniques, limits and continuity, definition and use of the derivative, and applications of calculus to problems in science and engineering. |

| LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The course consists of twelve lessons, including two supervised examinations. Each lesson has a submitted assignment consisting of a number of problems from the textbook. Some problems have solutions or hints which are given in an appendix to the study guide. All lesson assignments are evaluated. |
EXAMINATIONS: The course has two supervised examinations, each consisting of several problems to work. The examinations are preceded by self-check practice tests, which are not graded. Each examination covers approximately one-half of the course content, although concepts and techniques from the first half of the course will be needed for the final examination.
If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail. |
| GRADING CRITERIA: Final grades will be assigned according to the following scale:

B- to B+ = 75-87 %
C- to C+ = 62-74 %
D- to D+ = 50-61 %
F = Below 50 %
