MATH 211 - Elementary Linear Algebra
Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: Mathematics 113, or four years high school mathematics.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course emphasizes elementary matrix algebra, more particularly matrix as array. Other concepts for study are elementary row operations, invertible matrices and systems of linear equations, vector spaces and linear dependence and independence of vectors. The student should expect to learn and understand basis and dimension as well as determinants.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

TEXTBOOK: Sastry, M.S.K. and S.K. Jain, Lectures on Elementary Linear Algebra (Supplied with the course material and covered by the enrollment fee)
LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: There are eighteen lessons, including the midcourse and final examinations. Textbook exercises review the material presented with each lesson. In order to do well with this course, a student must understand each step in each lesson to be knowledgeable in elementary linear algebra. The instructor does not want the student to memorize the material; the student must understand it before going to the next step.
EXAMINATIONS: The midcourse examination will deal with material studied in the first half of the course. The final is comprehensive (Lessons 1-17). You will be allowed two hours to complete each exam. The instructor feels the lesson exercises are good preparatory steps to testing, but warns against taking the examinations if there are gaps in understanding.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

GRADING CRITERIA: Since the instructor places emphasis on a good working knowledge of lesson material, the total weight of lesson exercises is 30 percent of the final grade. The midcourse also counts 30 percent while the final examination is worth 40 percent of the final grade.

90 - 100% = A- to A
80 - 89% = B- to B
70 - 79% = C- to C
60 - 60% = D- to D

Below 60% = F

ENROLLMENT INFORMATION: Active Terms: Not term-based; self-paced study. Eight months to finish.

Registration Dates: Enroll at any time.
