MATH 115 - Pre-Calculus
Five Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: MATH 113 or 3 years of high school mathematics and Level 2 placement. Completion of this course satisfies the Tier I mathematics requirement. This course is recommended only for those students intending to enroll in MATH 263A.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The goal of this course is to prepare students with solid skills in algebra and geometry for college-level calculus. Topics covered include real numbers, equations, inequalities, polynomial and rational functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometry. The course focuses on intensive practice in setting up and solving problems.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

One-quarter inch graph paper is helpful in doing the lesson assignments.

LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The course has twenty lessons, including three supervised examinations. The seventeen regular lessons have one or more sets of problems for practice and several related problems that are submitted for evaluation and grading. Three lessons also have short Progress Tests that review concepts from several lessons.
EXAMINATIONS: The course has three supervised examinations, all consisting of problems similar to those in the lesson writing assignments and Progress Tests. Two hours is allowed for each of the first two examinations; three hours is allowed for the final examination, which is comprehensive, covering all the lessons of the course. Calculators may be used on exams, but full credit will not be given unless all steps in the problems are shown.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

GRADING CRITERIA: Lesson assignments are graded S+, S, S-, or F, and earn, respectively, 3, 2, 1, or 0 points. Each of the three Progress Tests earns up to 10 points. Total points for the course are assigned as follows:
