MATH 101 - Basic Mathematics
Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: None. Credit applies as hours toward graduation but meets no other college requirement. No credit will be awarded to a student who has passed a higher-level mathematics course.

COURSE OVERVIEW: This is a fundamental course in arithmetic and elementary algebra for students with unusually weak backgrounds. Topics in arithmetic are reviewed, and basic concepts of algebra are introduced.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The course consists of twelve lessons, including two supervised examinations. Each of the ten regular lessons assigns problems from the textbook for the student to complete and submit for evaluation.
EXAMINATIONS: This course requires two supervised examinations. Lessons 6 and 12 are two-hour supervised examinations containing questions similar to those in the writing assignments and to those in the self-check tests which precede each of the examinations. The final examination is comprehensive.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

GRADING CRITERIA: The final course grade will be determined as follows:

     Lesson Assignments     = 25%
     Midcourse Examination = 25%
     Final Examination          = 50%
