ENG 201W - Critical Approaches to Fiction
Four Quarter Hours

 
Prerequisites: Students must have completed on of the following: ENG 151, 152, 153A or 153B.
 
Course Overview: This course is designed to increase the enjoyment of reading by helping the student gain a sophisticated knowledge of the literary works covered in the course. It is expected that the student will read on both the narrative and symbolic level and study various techniques used in writing fiction. The course contains works covering some of the major authors of the twentieth century.
 
Methods of Course Instruction: All material for this course is web-based. Instructor and students communicate through e-mail. All assignments are submittd through the course website. Examinations cannot be taken by e-mail.

Technical Requirements: The following operating systems and browsers are fully tested and supported by Blackboard:

Other combinations of operating systems and browsers may be compatible with Blackboard 6.3. However, they have not been fully tested so you may experience problems.

 
Number of Lessons: There are nine lessons, including two graded examinations.
 
Types of Writing Assignments: These assignments will consist of questions concerning the reading as well as short papers on themes and symbols found in the books.
 
Examinations: There will be supervised, two-hour, midcourse and final examinations. There will be objective questions and essay questions asked. The final examination for English 201 will focus upon the material covered since the midcourse examination.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.
 
Grading Criteria:The course grade will be based both on the grades for the individual lessons and on the examination results. The marks on the examinations will count somewhat more heavily than those on the lessons.
