BUSL 356 - Law of the Management Process
Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: Business Law 255 and junior rank.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with the general principles of business organizations, particularly corporations and partnerships. Application of legal principles to business situations will include rights, powers and limits of managers in relation to duties and responsibilities to their organizations, owners, creditors, employees, customers, state and public.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

E-PRINT OPTION
Students may use e-mail to submit lesson assignments, using any e-mail provider and any standard e-mail software. The assignments that are submitted electronically are printed and sent to the instructor by mail, not e-mail, so assignments may be sent as attached documents, thus preserving the original format. Graded assignments will be returned as printed copy by postal mail. Instructions for the e-print option are enclosed with the course guide.

LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: There are sixteen lessons, including supervised midcourse and final examinations. Writing assignments will test the student's knowledge of textbook readings. Short essay answers are required with each lesson, which the student should answer with sound legal reasoning. Most lessons will require the student to brief one or more cases. Instruction is included on how to brief a case. This course requires a good understanding of the material presented and the ability to apply it to the problem situation in the business world.
EXAMINATIONS: There will be a midcourse and final examination, each two hours in duration. Objective and short essay questions are included. No textbooks or supplemental material of any kind will be allowed.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

GRADING CRITERIA: The student's final grade will be determined by counting the midcourse examination 1/3, the final examination 1/3, and the lessons 1/3. The quality of the lessons will be graded by an S+, S, S-, and U grading system.

Grades will be assigned on the following grading scale.

  90 - 100%  = A
  80 -   89%  = B
  70 -   79%  = C
  60 -   69%  = D
  Below 60% = F

Plus and minus grades may be assigned at the discretion of the instructor.
