BUSINESS MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY

BMT 260 - Business Report Writing
Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: None; this course is not open to students enrolled in the Ohio University College of Business.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course is intended for students who need an introduction to business writing in a variety of contexts. Some of the topics covered include letters, proposals, memos, research reports, and resumes, and considerations of audience (including cross-cultural communication), style, tone, and bias in business writing.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

A standard dictionary such as the American Heritage Dictionary or Encarta World Dictionary.

A current handbook of English usage is recommended, but not required. A list of suggested titles is included in the course study guide.

LESSONS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: The course has sixteen lessons, but only fifteen submitted assignments. The submitted assignments are related to the subject of each lesson. These may include review and short analysis, or creation of a memo, letter, proposal, or report. The course has no supervised examinations.
GRADING CRITERIA: Assignments deal with both format and content of business documents, and each is weighted in the grading. Grammar and spelling are considered, as well as how well students have paid attention to the assignment directions. All assignments receive letter grades and all are weighted equally in determining the final grade. Students will be given an opportunity to revise and re-submit any assignment which the instructor feels is significantly below the expected standard.
ENROLLMENT INFORMATION: Active Terms: Not term-based; self-paced study. Eight months to finish.
