BUSINESS MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY

BMT 170 - Small Business Operations
Four Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: None; introductory courses in accounting and management may be helpful. (This course cannot be used towards a degree for students enrolled in the Ohio University College of Business.)

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is an introduction to all aspects of managing a small business, including legal forms of organization, location, financing, product design and production, marketing, personnel, purchasing and inventory control, and taxes and insurance.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

If students have access to e-mail, they may use this method to send lesson assignments and receive the instructor's feedback. Students may use any e-mail provider and any standard e-mail software. E-mail accounts are not provided for Independent and Distance Learning Programs by Ohio University.

NUMBER OF LESSONS: The course has seven lessons, including a supervised final examination.
TYPES OF WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: Each lesson assignment consists of multiple-choice or true/false questions covering each of the two chapters in each lesson, and short essay answers for discussion or case study question. Optional Web assignments are included for most chapters. Lesson 3 is a case study assignment in which students will analyze and integrate information from the first half of the course.
EXAMINATIONS: The course has a comprehensive, supervised final examination consisting of multiple-choice and true/false questions similar to those in the lesson assignments and a short case study for analysis. No books, notes, or other aids are permitted. Two hours is allowed for the examination.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.

GRADING CRITERIA: All assignments will be graded, and the final grade will be weighted as follows:

    Average of lesson assignment grades = 50 percent
    Midcourse case study assignment = 25 percent
    Final examination = 25 percent
    Extra-credit for Web assignments = 12 percent

Students must achieve at least 60 percent on the final examination in order to pass the course, regardless of other grades.

    A = above 90 percent
    B = 80-89 percent
    C = 70-79 percent
    D = 60-69 percent
    F = Below 60 percent


Total percentage of course grades will be converted to a final grade on the following scale:
