BIOS 384 - Bioethical Problems in Biology and Medicine
Five Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: Nine hours of biological science (BIOS, MICR, or PBIO)

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course presents ethical problems arising from rapid advances in biological and biomedical research. Topics include: research involving humans or animals, patient-professional relationships in health care, informed consent, death with dignity, biological engineering, reproductive advances, organ transplantation, justice and health care, public health issues, biotechnology and bioscience.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

E-PRINT OPTION
Students may use e-mail to submit lesson assignments, using any e-mail provider and any standard e-mail software. The assignments that are submitted electronically are printed and sent to the instructor by mail, not e-mail, so assignments may be sent as attached documents, thus preserving the original format. Graded assignments will be returned as printed copy by postal mail. Instructions for the e-print option are enclosed with the course guide.

NUMBER OF LESSONS: This course consists of twelve lessons, including two supervised exams.
TYPES OF WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: Each lesson contains three essay questions which are based on the readings and which are to be submitted to the instructor for evaluation. The student is given opportunities to express his or her own opinions concerning some of the ethical dilemmas.
EXAMINATIONS: There will be two supervised examinations, each lasting two hours and each covering half of the course. The examinations consist of both multiple-choice and short-essay questions. Students are given some choice of essay questions.

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.
