BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

BIOS 103 - Human Biology
Five Quarter Hours

PREREQUISITES: None; the course is designed for non-science majors.

COURSE OVERVIEW: The course considers humans as living organisms, describing major systems and processes. Some discussion of ecology and the dynamics of human population is also included.

METHODS OF COURSE INSTRUCTION: All material for this course is print-based. Instructor and students communicate and exchange materials through postal mail.

E-PRINT OPTION
Students may use e-mail to submit lesson assignments, using any e-mail provider and any standard e-mail software. The assignments that are submitted electronically are printed and sent to the instructor by mail, not e-mail, so assignments may be sent as attached documents, thus preserving the original format. Graded assignments will be returned as printed copy by postal mail. Instructions for the e-print option are enclosed with the course guide.

NUMBER OF LESSONS: The course has fourteen lessons, including two supervised examinations.
TYPES OF WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: Each lesson has a submitted assignment consisting of four short-essay questions covering the reading of the lesson.
EXAMINATIONS: The course has two supervised examinations, each covering approximately half of the course content. The examinations consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (a sample test is included before the midcourse examination to give students practice with the format).

If you reside near an Ohio University campus, you must take your examination at the nearest campus. Others can arrange to have their examinations proctored at another accredited college or university or, if it is more convenient, at an accredited local high school. Ohio University reserves the right to reject a proposed examination supervisor. Detailed information about examination procedures will be included with your enrollment material. Examinations may not be taken online nor by e-mail.
GRADING CRITERIA: Lessons will be scored on a possible 100 points each. The average of the individual lessons plus the average on each exam (100 points possible for each) will be the basis of the final grade.

Exams, lessons, and final average will be scored on a numerical basis with an A equal to a range of 100 to 85, B equal to a range of 84 to 75, C equal to 74 to 65, D equal to 64 to 50, and 49 or below would not be a passing score. All final scores will be reported by the letter value. Plus and minus grades may also be given at the discretion of the instructor.
ENROLLMENT INFORMATION: Active Terms: Not term-based; self-paced study. Eight months to finish.
