Health Topics: Contraception: Vaginal spermicides, suppositories and Film
These are chemical spermicides that kills sperm. There has been reported a failure rate of 29 to 35 pregnancies per 100 women.
In order to use effectively:
Remove the film/suppository from the plastic or foil wrapper.
Slide the film/suppository into the vagina as far as it will go with your index finger. You want to get it as close as possible to the cervix so that it will provide maximum protection as it melts.
After insertion, wait about 20 minutes before having intercourse. (Times will vary among film/suppository brands. Read each package instruction sheet for the time limit for your particular brand of film/suppository.)
Use one film/suppository for each act of intercourse.
When you have intercourse more than once, or when you do not have intercourse during the half hour after insertion, insert another suppository to insure protection.
Do not douche after the last act of intercourse.
Advantages:
Films and suppositories can be purchased over the counter without a prescription.
They are inexpensive, have rare complications and are easy to use.
Individuals allergic to foams or creams/jellies can use vaginal contraceptive film.
Disadvantages:
Rare allergic reactions
Suppositories may fail to melt or effervesce in the vagina
Available in any pharmacy, grocery or convenience store that carries family planning methods.
