Piercing precautions Body piercing should ONLY be done with a new, sterile needle, rather than a piercing gun, to reduce risk of exposure to diseases. Piercing guns cannot be sterilized completely. Depending on the site of the piercing, some require more care than others. For example, a piercing through the upper rim of the ear goes through cartilage and takes an average of 2-3 months to heal. It must be cleaned 2-3 times daily during that time. Tongue piercing should be cleansed at least a dozen times per day with antiseptic mouthwash for 6-8 weeks. Navel piercings should be cleaned twice daily for at least 9 months and daily in the shower thereafter. Do not use alcohol on new piercings because it is too harsh and can destroy new healing tissue. An ointment with benzalkonium chloride, like Bactine or Neosporin is recommended.
Tattoo care After acquiring a tattoo, it is important to clean the area with soap and water. Leave it exposed to air when possible. Also, apply a mild hand cream to keep the area moist until healing is complete (usually 7 to 10 days). Do not expose the tattoo to sunlight for at least 2 weeks to prevent sunburn or pigment changes. Sunscreen must be applied if you are exposed to sunlight. Finally, swimming in fresh salt, or chlorinated water is discouraged.
