Influenza, commonly known as "the flu," is an infection of the respiratory tract caused by viruses. Symptoms may include:
weakness and nausea
sore throat and cough
head and muscle aches
fever and/or chills
stuffy nose
extreme fatigue
If you have these symptoms, you should take care of yourself by:
drinking a lot of water, especially to prevent dehydration; it will also help to break up mucous and flush out your system
washing your hands frequently
taking Tylenol or Ibuprofen for fever and headaches
gargling with warm salt water
You can reduce the chances of getting influenza by getting a flu vaccine. The Student Health Service generally administers influenza vaccinations on a first-come, first-served basis during December and January of each year. Call 593-1660 for details. The vaccination is available as long as the supply lasts. It takes your body about six weeks to build immunity to flu after receiving the vaccination. Also, get plenty of rest, eat well, and exercise regularly. For more information about influenza, please visit: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/flu/
