There are five categories of birth control: - The Natural Planning Method: Includes various methods, such as a period of abstinence with fertility awareness - the rhythm method.
- Barrier Methods: Condoms, diaphragms and the vaginal contraceptive sponges are examples of contraceptive devices that put physical barriers between the egg and sperm.
- Chemical Methods: Vaginal spermicides are examples of chemical contraceptives that destroy sperm.
- Invasive Methods: Intrauterine devices (IUDs), male sterilization (vasectomy) and female sterilization (tubal ligation) are methods that require that the body be entered (invaded) in order to insert a device or perform surgery for the purpose of contraception.
- Hormonal Methods: These include hormonal contraceptives that prevent ovulation or implantation such as oral contraceptives, Depo-Provera, Norplant, the Patch and Lunelle.
