Health Topics: Contraception: Condoms

The Latex League, located at 339 Baker University Center, sells condoms, latex gloves, and dental dams at cost.  In order to become a member, a person must watch a demonstration on the 13 steps of how to correctly use a condom.

Condoms are latex or animal membrane sheaths that fit over the erect penis and act as a barrier to the transmission of semen to the vagina, anus or mouth.

Condoms can be lubricated or non-lubricated, straight or tapered.  Some have a receptacle at the tip to catch the semen and some have spermicide on the inner and outer surfaces.  Condoms may be made of latex or animal skin.  While the animal skin can prevent the transmission of sperm, they are not as effective as the latex condom for preventing sexually transmitted infections.

Theoretically, latex condoms are 98% effective when used with spermicide.  The active use effectiveness rate is between 80-85%.  Two percent of the condoms are defective, while 13-18% of their ineffectiveness is related to user error.  The higher effectiveness rate is achieved by using the condom correctly every time.

In order to correctly use this method, put the condom on an erect penis before the penis is put into the vagina, anus or mouth.  Roll the rim of the condom all the way to the base of the penis.  If the condom does not have a receptacle at the tip, leave about one half inch of empty space.  After intercourse, hold on to the condom as you withdraw the penis.  The penis should be withdrawn soon after ejaculation because if the erection is lost, the condom can slip off and spill semen.  Also:
  • Use a condom every time you have intercourse or any other penetration
  • Store condoms in a cool, dry place
  • To increase the effectiveness of the condom, use a spermicide with nonoxynol-9 at the same time
  • Do not use oil-based lubricants, petroleum jelly or creams as they can deteriorate the condom.  If extra lubrication is desired, K-Y Jelly or spermicide with nonoxynol-9 may be used
  • Do not reuse condoms
