Health Topics: Bee Stings

Bee stings are more frequent during the months of September and October. Most likely, many of you have seen the masses of bees buzzing around the trash cans uptown. Did you know that bumble bees, hornets, wasps and yellow jackets can sting again and again, while honey bees sting, leave the stinger in you and then go off to die? If you have been stung by any of the above, the following is a list of optional care:
  • scrub area with soap and water
  • apply ice packs and compresses which can reduce itching and swelling
  • check on your tetanus status
  • take Tylenol or Ibuprofen to relieve pain and inflammation
  • an anti-itch medication, such as Benedryl, can reduce itching
  • apply Calamine lotion to the infected area

Getting help
You should come to Student Health Services at Hudson Health Center if:
