Abstinence means refraining from sexual intercourse, whether it is anal, oral or vaginal. For purposes of contraception, it refers to refraining from behaviors that allow semen to enter the vaginal area.
Choosing not to have sexual intercourse eliminates the risk of pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. Any person at any time has the right to decide that he or she would prefer not to have sexual intercourse.
