Specialist Care
If you require a specialist's care, a SHS physician will refer you to a medical specialist. Please be aware that you might be covered by your parents' health insurance plan. Please ask them to explain to you how the plan works. For instance, if it is a network insurance plan [Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) or Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)] permission might be required from the network before a referral can be made to a specialist physician outside the network. Since many physicians in Athens belong to networks throughout Ohio, there might be a local specialist physician who participates in your plan.
We can provide the name of a physician, and your parents can check that against their list of participating providers.
The Ohio University Student Injury & Sickness Plan preferred provider network in Ohio is Medical Mutual of Ohio, and is accepted by all local specialty physicians. For musculoskeletal injuries, there is a weekly sports medicine clinic, and you will be referred to this service.
