The Way to a Healthy Heart is Through Your Stomach

 

February is heart disease awareness month. Heart disease is America’s number one killer of both men and women.There are some important and simple steps you can take toward a healthy heart, through your eating habits.  

 The following are some easy tips for heart-healthy eating:
  • Replace a couple meals per week with a meat-less entrée.
  • Remove skin from chicken.
  • Eat fish 2 to 3 meals a week.
  • Prepare food by broiling, baking, and grilling.  Avoid frying.
  • Limit yourself to one or two daily servings of meat-the size of two decks of cards.
  • Replace some whole eggs with egg whites or cholesterol-free egg substitutes.
  • Replace whole milk dairy products with low-fat or fat-free dairy products.
  • Use cooking oils high in unsaturated fat, such as olive oil.
  • Replace butter with trans fat-free margarine and vegetable spreads.
  • Replace high-fat snacks and desserts with fruits and vegetables.
  • Keep washed and cut fruits and veggies in the fridge for quick use in meals.
  • Place fresh fruit in a bowl in the kitchen so it is easy to grab as a snack.
  • Replace white breads and buns with whole wheat versions.

“Even though February is Heart Health Month, it is always a good time to re-evaluate our eating and lifestyle patterns that may affect the overall health of our heart,” said WellWorks Nutrition Counselor.

 

Monday, February 6th through  February 11th
WellWorks Nutrition Department, working with the OU Student Dietetic and Nutrition with Science Association, will staff tables offering heart health information in the Grover Center Atrium. The week will be capped off with a 5K run/walk on Saturday with the proceeds going to the American Heart Association. There is no registration or cost for health information. Watch for posters with registration information about the 5K.lor Francie Astrom.

Join WellWorks in support of the *Go Red for Women Day Friday, Feb. 3 at Lui Lui Restaurant. When you order select heart-healthy lunch and dinner entrees, Lui Lui’s will donate 20 percent of the proceeds to the American Heart Association’s fight against heart disease. All Lui Lui’s diners will receive a heart association red dress pin and a red bracelet in support of heart health, while supplies last that day.
