Citing a 60-65% rise in market prices for natural gas, the university community has been asked to assist with reducing energy consumption. In addition, the university's coal supplier, also citing price increases for diesel fuel and energy
linked mining resources, has advised us to plan for increases of around 20-25%. The anticipated budgetary impact of the increased cost of these two fuels is $1.0-1.2 million for this fiscal year.
Experience has demonstrated that the university community can make significant changes in our total energy use. The immediate responses to our appeals this summer resulted in significant electrical savings. We are again enlisting the help of the campus community in maintaining the actions listed to the right to reduce energy consumption. Also, during the day, thermostats should be set no higher than 68 degrees except for areas containing sensitive equipment and/or research that requires special conditions. Office staff should plan to deal with the cooler temperatures by having extra clothing available. NOTE: We realize that many areas do not have thermostats available to adjust and Facilities and Auxiliaries staff will take appropriate action to exercise temperature control in these areas as best we can.
Energy Saving Tips for Campus
turn off radiators or close vents wherever possible rather than opening windows to cool offices, classrooms or residence hall rooms.
turn off computer monitors and CPU's and other equipment when not in use, especially overnight.
reduce electrical consumption by turning off unnecessary lights, window air conditioners and other electrical appliances, especially in areas that are not occupied.
Departments are asked to assure that lights are shut off in classrooms, workspaces and offices when not in use and at the end of each day.
not use electric heaters unless their use is approved by Facilities and Auxiliaries.
