Employees Work Together to Save Grover by Nina Fiorini
In the early morning of Monday, April 3, 2006 there was a failure in the fourth floor valve in Grover Center’s chilled water piping system. Due to that failure, 28,000 to 52,000 gallons of water began to flood Grover Center.
The men and women from Facilities Management worked 18 hours a day for one week to help save the building. These employees removed of all of the water by 6:30pm, Sunday, April 8. In all, nearly 200 employees (see list below) from Facilities Management, Maintenance Operations, Environmental Health and Safety and the Ohio University Police Department, worked to save Grover Center. There was however, significant damage done to the building. The main part of the building that was impacted was the north side.
Overall the flood damaged 70 offices, 12 classrooms, and parts of the WellWorks Fitness Center. A total of 338 classes are held in Grover, and 109 of those classes had to be moved to different buildings on campus such as Gordy Hall, Bentley, and Copeland. The three schools that were hit the hardest within Grover include Nursing, Health Sciences, and Recreation and Sports Sciences.
