compensation- frequently asked questions

These Frequently Asked Questions will assist with helping employees understand how the new Administrative pay plan works, and how it is being implemented.  Additional FAQs will be added as necessary.

3.4.10

Are there future plans to change the other compensation plans?
After the Administrative plan is fully implemented, other plans will be reviewed.

How is priority given to planning units and/or departments in the implementation process?

Departments that have had recent restructuring will be addressed first.  Others will be identified by executive leadership.

How long will the process take for individual departments?

One to two months, depending on the size and complexity of the department.

When will we know where our department is scheduled in the process?

Schedules will be updated and posted on the UHR Compensation website.

What is a career band?

A career band is a sub-set of jobs commonly found in the market with a recognized specialty, grouped within the larger context of a career progression.

Is the current position evaluation system no longer to be used?

The current position evaluation system may still be utilized in cases where insufficient external market data exists.

Has the position evaluation approval process changed?

Policies regarding compensation practices are currently being reviewed and will be modified as implementation progresses.

What will happen to current position titles?

Standardized, conventional titles which are in line with the external market will be used to facilitate benchmarking. However, “Working titles” may be used for business cards, etc, subject to Management approval.

What is meant by the term, “lateral movement”?

In contrast to “promotions”, lateral movement may be available to positions of similar scope and complexity in different or adjacent job families. For example, a “senior accountant” moves laterally to become a “senior financial analyst” or to a totally different job family as a “marketing analyst”.

How are “career bands” different from the current pay grades?

Career bands will have a broader salary range, up to approximately 200%, that will allow much greater flexibility with pay determinations.  The current pay grade has a narrow range of approximately 50%.In addition, for example, grade 84 has many different types of jobs all using the same salary range. With career bands, each job family would have its own unique salary range. As a result, career band salary ranges are very accurately tied to the external market.

How will these changes impact current salaries?

Current salaries will not be impacted.
