What is a Resident Assistant?

A Resident Assistant (RA) is a student staff member who serves the 30-50 residents of a floor section in a variety of ways -- from helping students to coordinating educational programs, from developing community, to upholding university policies. This is a people-oriented position that requires emotional maturity, self-awareness, and strong interpersonal communication skills. Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to assist students in the areas of:

  • health & safety
  • scholarship
  • student development
  • citizenship
  • diversity

Administrative Resident Assistants and Senior Resident Assistants fulfill the role of Resident Assistants with the added responsibilities of greater administrative and leadership duties within their hall or complex.


Who's Eligible?

  • You must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student
  • You must be in good standing with the Office of Community Standards and Student Responsibility
  • You must have a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • You must have strong interpersonal skills and leadership potential

The Hiring Process

The Department of Residential Housing goes through a student staff hiring process once each year. The process begins early or mid fall semester and involves a written application, interview process and training. All candidates who successfully complete the application and interview phase will be required to complete EDCP 400, our RA training class, before they officially start their position in Fall 2015.

RA Application opens: October 13, 2014

Applications & reference due: November 7

Interview Offers made: November 14

Interview Weekend: November 21, 22, 23

RA Offers (via email): January 2015

RA Class: February-April 2015

Salary & Benefits

Resident Assistants

*Room:  $2,901/semester (90% of room rate; your share equals $322/semester)

*Based on 2014-2015 Compensation Rates  

Stipend: $2,461 per academic year
