Patrick Barr-Melej received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley and is Associate Professor of History, specializing in modern Latin America. A native of South America and raised in California’s San Joaquin Valley, he earned a B.A. in History and Political Science and an M.A. in History from the University of California at Davis. His graduate studies at Berkeley and Davis also included modern European history and Latin American literary culture. His research focuses on the political and cultural history of twentieth-century Chile. Professor Barr-Melej’s publications include the book Reforming Chile: Cultural Politics, Nationalism, and the Rise of the Middle Class (University of North Carolina Press) and articles in the Hispanic American Historical Review, the Journal of Latin American Studies, The Americas, and other journals. He is currently writing a book about young people, counterculture, drugs, sex, and rock music during Salvador Allende’s “Chilean road to socialism” (1970-1973). Psychedelic Chile: Youth, Counterculture, and Politics on the Road to Socialism and Dictatorship will be published by the University of North Carolina Press. Professor Barr-Melej has presented more than two-dozen invited lectures and conference papers on four continents, including stops at the Sorbonne in Paris, the University of Cambridge, the University of London, and the National Library of Chile. He also has been a visiting professor in the history graduate programs at Chile’s Pontifical Catholic University and the University of Concepción. Moreover, Dr. Barr-Melej has served as a grant evaluator for the government of Chile and as an article manuscript referee for six academic journals. His other activities include serving as President of the Southwestern Historical Association, as an associate editor for the next edition of the Encyclopedia of Latin American History and Culture (Thomson/Gale), as a member of the Latin American Studies acquisitions committee of Ohio University Press, and as a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Revista de Historia, a Chilean historical journal. Barr-Melej’s courses at OU include ‘Nineteenth-Century Latin America,’ ‘Twentieth-Century Latin America,’ ‘The History of Modern Mexico,’ ‘Western Heritage: Modernity,’ and graduate and undergraduate seminars.
