Policy on Rights of a Teaching Associate

Purpose
To provide teaching associates with the requirements and rights of their status as teaching associates.

Policy
Teaching by a student serves, among other things, to encourage an understanding of and appreciation for the academic freedom enjoyed and protected by professors.

The students, whom the teaching student instructs, enjoy a policy which clearly delineates the distinction between academic requirements and the student's personal dress and appearance.

Requirements
The teaching student shall not be required to adhere to any particular form of dress or appearance as a condition of employment or retention in a teaching or research capacity unless it can be demonstrated that the requirement has academic relevance to the particular course being taught or is made to insure safety.

If requirements of dress or other items of personal appearance are made, they shall be such that they affect the student only during the particular class he/she teaches and do not carry over outside class, office, laboratory, or other official contracted hours.

If it is deemed necessary to establish requirements regarding personal dress and appearance of a student, these shall be communicated in writing to the student at the time of issuance of a contract. These regulations apply to students in their capacities as teachers and do not replace or alter University codes already adopted concerning student dress and appearance.
