Students in Child and Family Studies with a concentration in child life will get the opportunity to spend four weeks in Cape Town, South Africa as a volunteer and/or doing intense volunteer experience work at Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Students will work with the Child Life staff and the Pain Management Team in a variety of inpatient wards throughout the hospital. In addition, students will get the chance to participate in four to five children’s health service-learning projects.
The group will work with Connect-123, an organization that develops and manages volunteer, internship and study abroad programs in a variety of cities, including Cape Town. Connect-123 will integrate service-learning experiences into the students’ educational program; these experiences include assisting at a medical clinic in one of the area townships, providing activities for HIV+ teenagers and spending the day at an assisted living medical facility for children.
